A Wild Chase

“What!” Nancy exclaimed.

Bess began banging frantically on the morgue door. “Help!” she shouted. “Somebody get us out of here!”

“I—I can’t believe we’re stuck in here with a dead body,” George said shakily. She glanced at the corpse lying on the table, then looked around the room. “And there’s no phone in here, so we can’t call anyone to get us out.”

Nancy took a deep breath to calm herself, then walked up to Bess. “Here, let me try that door. Maybe it’s just stuck or something.”

Bess moved aside instantly. “Be my guest. Just get us out of here.”

Nancy put her hand on the knob to jiggle it. The door was definitely stuck. “Maybe I can try using the tools in my lockpicking kit,” she said, reaching into her purse.

But after half an hour of working with her tools, Nancy was unable to pry the door open. “I give up,” she announced to her friends, who were hovering nearby, shivering in the chilly air. “I guess well just have to wait for someone to get us out of here.”

“No one’s come down here yet,” George pointed out worriedly. “What if we’re trapped in here all day—and all night?”

“I don’t know—” Nancy began, then fell silent. Were those footsteps she heard out in the hallway.

She began banging on the door. “Help! Help, get us out of here!” she yelled.

A moment later the knob began to rattle from the other side. The door opened.

Nancy found herself staring at a middle-aged man dressed in jeans, a black football jersey, and a white lab coat. He was big and bearlike, with curly brown hair and a bushy beard.

He stared at her in amazement. “Who are you? And what are you doing in here?”

“I’m Nancy Drew, and I have an appointment with Dr. Aristotle Kiriakis,” Nancy explained. “The receptionist told us we could find him in here. But then the door got stuck—”

“I’m Dr. Kiriakis,” the man cut in. He sighed and shook his head. “I told the receptionist Room Fifty-six. She must have written it down wrong.”

Bess scurried past them and went out the door. “I don’t know about the rest of you,” she said, “but I’d rather be having this meeting somewhere else.”

Dr. Kiriakis frowned at her. “Who’s she?”

“That’s Bess Marvin. And this”—Nancy nodded toward George—“is George Fayne. I asked them to come with me. I hope that’s okay.”

“No problem. The more the merrier—although that’s kind of a weird thing to say in a morgue, isn’t it?” The doctor chuckled at his own gruesome joke, then pointed to Room 56, across the hallway. “Come this way. I’m sorry about this door—it gets stuck sometimes. The trick is, you have to lift up the knob before you turn it.”

“Shouldn’t you get it fixed?” George suggested.

Dr. Kiriakis laughed. “I’ll make a note of it.”

He opened the door to Room 56. It appeared to be a laboratory; the long black counters were covered with glass beakers, and off in the corner was a large sink. “I
